Earth 23

After an extended absence, I have returned. Comics, movies, writing, anything goes.

The Justice Society of Earth 2:

Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkwoman

These are cool.. but why is there an Earth 2?

Well it’s a little complicated, but basically in the early Sixties, when DC was bringing back heroes like The Flash and Green Lantern as new heroes, they decided it would be cool if they could team-up with the original. To explain why none of these characters had met their predecessors before, the originals (Jay, Alan, etc.) were moved to a parallel universe: Earth Two. On that Earth, heroes had been around since 1939. On a meta level any stories published during the Golden Age of Superhero Comics (roughly from the debut of Superman up until the establishment of the Comics Code Authority) were retconned into having occurred on Earth-Two. The heroes of that earth had aged in real time and were older and wiser. They even had yearly team-ups with the Justice League.

Sadly, this was too confusing (allegedly) and Earth-Two was fused with Earth-One (home of Barry Allen, Hal Jordan, so on) following DC’s first big reboot, Crisis on Infinite Earths, in 1986). The characters were still around, but now ridiculously long-lived, and serving as the elder statesmen of the Cape-and-Mask community. They even turned the Society into a kind of legacy team with successors to guys like Dr. Mid-Nite and Hourman serving alongside the older Flash, GL, and Wildcat.

These three (seen above) are from the post-52 version of Earth-2 and have been de-aged. This Earth 2 has more differences, but those would be spoilers. I’d recommend getting the first issue at least.

Short version: Earth 2 was previously a retirement home for badasses, and now it’s back just because parallel universes are cool. I mean really: Marvel’s Ultimate line, Remender’s Uncanny X-Force, Higher Earth? Parallel universes are all over the place. It’s the kind of time-honored concept that keeps coming back.

Um… I know why there are other Earths. My question is why is there an Earth 2 now? DC’s biggest point with the reboot was to get rid of all the extra Earth’s/universes and have just one. Now, they suddenly have an Earth 2, negating their part of the reasoning for the reboot. There should not be any other Earths by DC’s own reasoning. It’s ridiculous.

I don’t mind if they want to tell stories with these folks, but it really makes no sense to have all of the Earth’s meld into one and then, because they want to re-establish a character as gay without screwing with the current canon, they ignore the melding and create another Earth. DC really should make up their damn minds and stick by their decisions.

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood your question. That said, I don’t see the problem with DC melding certain universes and bringing back others. Besides, DC’s never going to “stick by their decisions” it’s a company trying to sell products. Since those products happen to be ideas, they’ll get re-imagined and revisited over time. And it’s not like Earth 2 was created just to make Alan Scott gay. That was a detail that Robinson added to the character and it’s been made into a big news item. Also, it’s been kind of clear for months that the multiverse wasn’t gone. Superman mentions seeing other realities in the first JL arc and with Kal being re-established as the first superhero, the JSA was going to need another earth to comeback anyway. Having them on Earth-2 instead of Earth-0 is less confusing story-wise anyway.

I guess I would’ve rather seen them try and be more creative and fit their newly-re-established gay character into the existing canon than bring up another Earth. I am curious about the Earth-2 heroes, but not sure that I’d follow them as much as other titles. Also, are they to be the originals set in a modern time or will it be set in the 30s? That is part of what has me curious about Earth-2, but I still think some of this could’ve been part of the existing canon, too. If that makes sense.

That’s understandable. The series takes place in the modern day. The first issue is set around the same time as the first Justice League arc then it jumps ahead five years.
